San Diego:

Humanitarian Wave’s (HW) purpose is to support community base ideas that promote the well-being and the quality of life of communities and its members.

            Mount Hope Boxing Project

Mount Hope Boxing (MHB) is a community base initiative in the ethnically diverse neighborhood of Mount Hope in the City of San Diego.  The purpose of MHB is to promote the well being of children and youth of the community through physical and educational programs.

In the beginning of 2010, one community leader, Mr. Juan Cruz took initiative to provide sports and fitness activities as a way of helping the children of the community stay off gangs and drugs. Mr. Cruz was a former U.S. Youth Olympic boxer and it was through this experience and a desire to help the children of the community that he started to teach boxing and fitness out of his small house garage.

The community of Mount Hope had no concrete programs addressing the needs of the children and youth of the community. For the last year on an average week over 50 children form part of Mr. Cruz program and therefore become part of something constructive, healthy and productive that could only translate into something positive in their lives and that of the community.

HW’s purpose is to help MHB create, develop and expands program ideas in the areas of sports, health and education programs. One of the main goals of this project is to help find MHB a facility to run, grow and solidify its programs. This year project will concentrate on solidifying and expanding MHB sports and fitness program and the development of a new education program named “Workshop Wednesdays”.

HB Sport and Fitness program:

MHB sports and fitness programs provides avenues to help the children learn about a healthy mind and body through fitness, boxing, and yoga classes.  The classes are supported by a network of volunteers on a weekly basis.

Workshop Wednesdays Program:

In an effort to provide more activities and opportunities for the children of MHB a series of workshops will be created in the areas of arts, music, literacy and sustainable gardening.  The intention is to create a community project and organize a volunteer base project that stimulate team-work and develops skills.

The project combines agricultural production and natural resources conservation as income generating activities for the support of the women owned cooperative “Mujeres Ecologistas de la Sierra de Petatlan”.  This project incorporates the development of sustainable income with the conservation efforts of the Melipona bee.

The organization is comprised of 90 impoverished women farmers from the mountain regions of Guerrero.  The organization was formed in 2002 in an effort to peacefully stop the indiscriminate and illegal logging of native trees of their region.  As of today the women have planted over half a million trees.  This group of women has organized to not only educate women from the region on the importance of the conservation of their resources, but also create ecological approaches to food production as well as income generating conservation activities that helpsustain their families.

The MELIPONA bee is under threat of extinction due to the destruction of their natural habitat by the indiscriminate logging of trees in this region.  The women received training from apiculture engineers and the local organization Guerrero Verde on how to procreate the bees and to extract the honey and other hive products.  Humanitarian Wave provided the funds to initiate the apiculture project including purchasing the necessary material for the construction of wooden hives as well as a workshop area for the extraction of the honey and its products.  The market cost for the honey is $80 USD per gallon.  The MELIPONAS bee project helped produce a source of sustainable income for these women in addition to helping the sustainability of the natural resources of this region.
